# Rounding Whole Numbers

## Thousands Place

Rounding a number means to change its value slightly so it is not as exact as the original number. Numbers are rounded to a certain place value - tens, hundreds, thousands. etc..

Numbers are rounded to make it easier to do various math processes such as estimating costs in one's head or dividing larger numbers.

RULE: To round a four digit number or higher number to the nearest thousands place:

• If the number in the hundreds place of a four digit number is less than five, round the number down to the nearest thousands place. If the number in the hundreds place is greater than five, round it up to the nearest thousands place.

Example 1: Round 7436 to the nearest thousands place

• The number 4 in the hundreds place is less than five. Therefore the number 7436 is rounded down to 7000.
• 7436 rounded to the nearest thousands place is 7000.

Example 2: Round 2748 to the nearest thousands place.

• The number 7 in the hundreds place is greater than five. Therefore the number 2748 is rounded up to 3000.
• 2748 rounded to the nearest thousands place is 3000.

Example 3: Round 9346 to the nearest thousands place.

• The number 3 in hundreds place is less than five. Therefore the number 9346 is rounded down to 9000.
• 9346 rounded to the nearest thousands place is 9000.

Example 4: Round the number 9674 to the nearest thousands place.

• This one is tricky. The number 6 in the hundreds place is greater than five. Therefore the number 9674 is rounded up to 10000.
• 9674 rounded to the nearest thousands place is 10000.
